COSTA REHAB. By Rich Rubin
Wheeler and Corso, two injured Iraq veterans, are recuperating in the rehab unit of a stateside Army hospital. Their friendship is based on a profane camaraderie and a shared, if unstated, experience of war. Both men, however, are bored and sliding towards burnout, worn down by the weight of their injuries and the impersonal face of the Army bureaucracy. The arrival of Davis, a third injured vet, serves to rejuvenate the other two soldiers, providing them with a fresh, if unconventional, mission to focus on. Their subversive quest on Davis’s behalf leads to a renewed sense of hope for all three of them.
We are donating 5% of the total box office gross to Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) and 100% of the proceeds of one performance to that organization. More importantly, we're casting a light on a subject that it seems like many have forgotten about. It is timely and relevant, and we want to salute our nation's heroes who have sacrificed so much.
About the cast/crew.
Ryan Noel as Corso
Dropping into the cast from a Government black helicopter, Ryan brings with him energy and experience - the likes of which are impressively impressive. From his humble beginnings in small-town Oregon, Ryan took the family sword and went out into the world on an epic quest. After numerous adventures in the civilian job-market, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the start of 2006 as a Artillery Fire Support Man, eventually earning the rank of Sergeant. Serving two combat-tours in Iraq as part of a convoy security team, Ryan's experience provides a valuable asset of knowledge and personal experiences to this production. It was there in the sweltering desert that Ryan found his true love of theater. After leaving active duty in 2010, Ryan enrolled at Portland Community College and is currently working towards dual degrees in Microelectronics and Solar Voltaic Manufacturing Technology. He still maintains his acting professionally, having appeared in two seasons of TNT's Leverage, as well as performing with PANTS, Portland Community College's Improv comedy team. In his free time, Ryan enjoys table-top role-playing games, board games, and is a member of Legio II Augusta, a Roman reenactment group.
Joseph Gibson as Wheeler
Joseph is excited to make his Portland debut with Book of Dreams Productions.Born and raised in Houston,TX, Joseph has been acting for over a decade in a plethora of commercials, short films, and plays. Recently Joseph has done commercials for Directors Mortgage, Bend Broadband, and will be seen in AGA Film's upcoming short "The Circle." Joseph dedicates his performance to the men and women who selflessly serve in the armed forces, and would like to send a special thanks to Derek Sitter and the Actors at The Actors Realm for reinvigorating his passion for truth in acting. Enjoy the show!
Lisa Sorenson as Lewicki
Lisa is excited to be returning to acting after a long hiatus. She has appeared in several local commercials, and was most recently shot on camera running a red light on Burnside. Lisa can also be seen as Kara in The Fury, a short horror-based film, shot right here in the Pacific Northwest. When she isn't acting, Lisa spends most of her time memorizing movie quotes and rap songs, drinking red wine, starting spontaneous dance parties, cooking, or singing 80's power ballads on the karaoke machine with her brother in the living room while they both weep softly and binge on late night pizza (sorry, Cody). Common words used to describe Lisa are riveting, charismatic, plucky, tantalizing, keen, wise and most importantly, modest. Agree to disagree... Lisa enjoys cheese, baby porcupines, and a nice pair of arm warmers. She sincerely hopes you enjoy the show and you are invited take her for a drink afterwards. :) Thank you for coming!!!
Valerie Martinka as Cramer
Hailing from Dallas, TX, Valerie is excited to be marking her 1 year Portland anniversary with opening weekend of Costa Rehab! She's enjoyed getting to know the talented Portland acting community working with Masque Alfresco, local film companies, and now the beautiful folks at Book of Dreams. Favorite roles include Gogo in Waiting for Godot and Louise in Haiku. Thanks to Rich Rubin for writing a play that looks at being known in a community, and much love to her own community here who have taken the time to get to know her. And of course, to her beloved family. If she weren't headed to work after the show, she'd ask you to come salsa or swing dancing!
Brooks Kaya as Davis.
After graduating from Business school, Brooks studied acting in both Europe and Portland. He is pretty new to the world of theatre and can be seen in the upcoming film “Fury” directed by Garrett Benach. When he’s not acting, Brooks manages The S Group, a local apparel design company. He is thrilled to be a part of such a solid cast and hopes to pursue acting and see more of the world with his lady and two dogs. Brooks’ ethics and morals go out the window when you challenge him to a fun friendly family game.
Beth Damiano as Cinnamon
Beth Damiano is a native of Florida and has been in Portland for 2 years. In her teens, she performed in Salute to Broadway and several original productions with Curtain Call Theatre in Tampa. She has appeared in The Miracle Worker as Kate Keller; The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas as Shy; The Fifth Planet as Veronica; Bang, Bang, You're Dead as Jessie; and Enchanted Sleeping Beauty as Quill. Since moving to Portland, she has played Mysterious Skin as Avalyn as well as Joanie in The Dark Things as part of the 2011 Fertile Grounds Festival. Beth has a BA degree in Philosophy, because a Theatre Arts degree would have just been impractical. Currently she spends her time reading, writing, acting, haunting Powell's and hating the weather. She would like to thank her wonderful Costa Rehab cast for being so amazing and making rehearsal fun.
Maille O'Brien, stage manager
Maille O'Brien is proud to be doing her first show with Book of Dreams Productions. In 2005 she received her BA in Applied Theatre Arts at University of Oregon. Last year she helped begin Mask and Mirror Community Theatre in Tigard. Fall, 2011, she was in their first show, "The Green Room." She was last seen in Lumiere Player's "The Red Velvet Cake War," (Spring 2012) which she also Stage Managed and Assistant Directed. She would like to thank her parents, friends and family, for supporting her through so much thick and thin, and knowing that theatre is her dream and helping her do whatever it takes to make that dream come true. I love you!

Rich Rubin, playwright
Rich Rubin (Playwright) – Rich’s plays have been produced at theaters throughout the U.S., including New York, Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles. Internationally, his work has been staged in Berlin, Sydney, Singapore, Canada and the U. K. A proud member of the Dramatists Guild and Portland’s Nameless Playwrights group, Rich would like to thank Matt and this vibrant cast and crew for bringing Costa Rehab to life in Oregon.
Matt Russell, director
Matt's favorite projects thus far have been Eye of God and Curse of the Starving Class, both for Paula Productions (which no longer exists, but it's not his fault), Forever Plaid at HART, and his own play Minority Status Quo, a student production at Clackamas Community College. His passions include bridging the gulf between the gay and Christian communities, finding an end to bullying, and producing thought-provoking theatre (writing and directing it), sometimes dealing with the above topics. That is why he created Book of Dreams Productions. Please set out to meet him, get to know him, as he has too few friends or professional connections.
